Gold iPhone 17 Pro Max or 18 Pro Max? The Price Gap, Design by Design
Leronza lists a full Gold iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max range right next to the Gold iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max range, and many designs exist in both. That raises a plain buying question: if you pick the newer phone, what does it add to the bill? The answer is not one number. It depends on the collection, and in one collection the newer phone is actually the cheaper one. This guide compares every design that appears in both lines, using live catalogue prices.
How the comparison was made
Every price below is for the 24K Gold finish at 256 GB with a new iPhone included, shown for both the Pro and the Pro Max. The prices are read live from the catalogue, and each 17 price links to that design’s iPhone 17 page while each design name links to its iPhone 18 page. On the designs compared here, Rose Gold and Platinum are priced the same as 24K Gold within a design, so the finish does not change the comparison; for the Ecstasy designs, confirm the finish on the product page. The “use my own iPhone” option is left out of the like-for-like tables because it only appears on the 18 pages. It gets its own section further down.
Classic: the one collection where the newer phone costs less
Classic is the entry collection, and it is where the two lines behave differently. At the prices live when this was written, the Black design is cheaper on the 18 than on the 17, which is the opposite of what you would expect. Silver goes the other way and sits one step higher on the 18.
| Design | 17 Pro | 18 Pro | 17 Pro Max | 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black | $ 3,590 | $ 2,990 | $ 3,790 | $ 3,190 |
| Silver | $ 2,890 | $ 2,990 | $ 3,090 | $ 3,190 |
Two Classic designs exist in only one line: Deep Blue and Cosmic Orange are 17-only, while Glacier and Burgundy are 18-only.
Rhodium: the matte colour collection
The Rhodium matte designs are the entry price of the 17 line and the widest like-for-like gap in the comparison. Each one costs more on the 18, and the step is larger on most colours than on Nocturne Edition. If one of these matte colours is what you want and budget is the constraint, this is the collection where the 17 saves the most.
| Design | 17 Pro | 18 Pro | 17 Pro Max | 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nocturne Edition (matte black) | $ 2,799 | $ 2,990 | $ 3,099 | $ 3,190 |
| Rose Impériale (matte pink) | $ 2,799 | $ 3,290 | $ 3,099 | $ 3,490 |
| Umber Prestige (matte brown) | $ 2,799 | $ 3,290 | $ 3,099 | $ 3,490 |
| Verdant Supreme (matte green) | $ 2,799 | $ 3,290 | $ 3,099 | $ 3,490 |
| Vermillion Signature (matte red) | $ 2,799 | $ 3,290 | $ 3,099 | $ 3,490 |
| Amethyst Royale (matte purple) | $ 2,799 | $ 3,290 | $ 3,099 | $ 3,490 |
Aqua Supreme (matte aqua) and Cacao Noir (matte chocolate) exist only in the 18 line.
Prime: a flat step up
Prime is the largest group of shared designs, and it is the most predictable. Every design in the table costs the same single step more on the 18, at both sizes. If you were going to buy Prime anyway, there is no design here where the 17 is a meaningfully different price proposition.
| Design | 17 Pro | 18 Pro | 17 Pro Max | 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Signature | $ 3,590 | $ 3,690 | $ 3,790 | $ 3,890 |
| Elite | $ 3,490 | $ 3,590 | $ 3,690 | $ 3,790 |
| Artisan | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 | $ 4,290 | $ 4,390 |
| Bitcoin | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 | $ 4,290 | $ 4,390 |
| Flora | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 | $ 4,290 | $ 4,390 |
| Imperial | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 | $ 4,290 | $ 4,390 |
| Le Lion Fleur | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 | $ 4,290 | $ 4,390 |
| Noble | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 | $ 4,290 | $ 4,390 |
Mother of Pearl, Exotic Leather and Carbon Fiber: the same flat step
The three material collections follow the same rule as Prime. Within each table the 256 GB step between 17 and 18 is one fixed amount, the same on the Pro and on the Pro Max. If you are choosing between these materials in the first place, our guide to choosing the material for a Gold iPhone 18 Pro covers how they differ in look and feel.
| Design | 17 Pro | 18 Pro | 17 Pro Max | 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Majesty | $ 3,890 | $ 3,990 | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 |
| Majesty Victory | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
| Noble Pearl | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
| Royale | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
| Design | 17 Pro | 18 Pro | 17 Pro Max | 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WildGrace | $ 3,890 | $ 3,990 | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 |
| WildGrace Victory | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
| Exotic Noble | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
| Exotic Royale | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
| Design | 17 Pro | 18 Pro | 17 Pro Max | 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CarbonFiber | $ 3,890 | $ 3,990 | $ 4,090 | $ 4,190 |
| CarbonFiber Noble | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
| CarbonFiber Royale | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
| CarbonFiber Victory | $ 4,390 | $ 4,490 | $ 4,590 | $ 4,690 |
Ecstasy: same step, much bigger numbers
The two Ecstasy designs that exist in both lines carry the same flat step as Prime. Because the base prices are far higher, the step is a small fraction of the total, so for these designs the newer phone adds very little in relative terms.
| Design | 17 Pro | 18 Pro | 17 Pro Max | 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IconixBold | $ 10,690 | $ 10,790 | $ 11,690 | $ 11,790 |
| IconixEdge | $ 12,990 | $ 13,090 | $ 13,690 | $ 13,790 |
Supernova is 18-only; the Supernova explainer covers what it is. The four Evil Eye designs (Hamsa Eye Amulet, LuxEvil Charm, Meandros Blessing Eye and Seraphic Hamsa Blessing) are also 18-only, and are covered in the Evil Eye collection guide.
Worked example: Elite, capacity by capacity
Elite is the plain Prime design, and it is on sale in both lines with the same options, which makes it a clean test. The 18 listing also has a “use my own iPhone” option, shown on the last row.
| Option (Pro Max, 24K Gold) | iPhone 17 Elite | iPhone 18 Elite |
|---|---|---|
| 256 GB, new iPhone included | $ 3,690 | $ 3,790 |
| 512 GB, new iPhone included | $ 3,990 | $ 4,090 |
| 1 TB, new iPhone included | $ 4,290 | $ 4,590 |
| 2 TB, new iPhone included | $ 4,890 | $ 5,390 |
| Use my own iPhone (capacity as supplied) | Not offered on the 17 page | $ 2,390 |
Two things stand out. First, the gap between the lines is not constant: at the smaller capacities the 18 sits one step above the 17, but at 1 TB the gap is wider and at 2 TB it is wider again, so the premium for the newer phone grows with storage. If you are buying a high-capacity phone, compare at your actual capacity, not at 256 GB. Second, the iPhone 17 Elite page lists 2 TB for the Pro Max only, while the iPhone 18 Elite page lists 2 TB for both the Pro and the Pro Max. If you want a Pro at 2 TB, that is an 18-only combination.
What only one line has
| iPhone 17 line | iPhone 18 line | |
|---|---|---|
| Designs found in only this line | Deep Blue, Cosmic Orange | Glacier, Burgundy, Aqua Supreme, Cacao Noir, Supernova, four Evil Eye designs |
| “Use my own iPhone” option | Not listed | Listed on the pages checked, at a lower price than the new-iPhone option |
| Plating | 24K Gold, Rose Gold or Platinum at 5 to 7 microns on both lines | |
| Wireless charging after plating | Not supported on a plated back; charge by USB-C | |
The iPhone 18 Elite page publishes Apple’s hardware figures for the phone underneath (display, chip, cameras, battery). The iPhone 17 page checked does not list the same figures, so this guide does not compare hardware; for that, use Apple’s own published specs for each model.
How to decide
- You already own an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max. Only the 18 line offers the own-iPhone option, which is the cheapest way into any design.
- You want a matte Rhodium colour and watch the budget. This is where the 17 line is cheapest, and the widest gap in the comparison.
- You want Classic Black. Check both pages; at the prices live when this was written the 18 was the lower one.
- You want Prime, a material collection or Ecstasy. The step is one fixed amount; choose on the phone, not the price.
- You want a 2 TB Pro, or an Evil Eye, Supernova, Glacier, Burgundy, Aqua Supreme or Cacao Noir design. These are 18-only.
- You are weighing Pro against Pro Max. That decision is the same on both lines; see what the size choice adds to the price.
Questions buyers ask
Are the iPhone 17 designs still available to order at Leronza?
Yes. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max product pages are live and orderable on the same terms as the 18 line: a 50% deposit or payment in full. Check the page for the design you want.
Is the plating different between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 lines?
No. Both lines are plated in 24K Gold, Rose Gold or Platinum at 5 to 7 microns, and wireless charging is not supported on a plated back in either line.
Can I use my own iPhone on a 17 design?
The iPhone 17 product pages do not list a use-my-own-iPhone option. The 18 pages do. If you want to send in your own handset, see the send-in process.
Does the Pro Max cost the same extra over the Pro on both lines?
Mostly yes. At 256 GB the Pro-to-Pro-Max step is the same on both lines for the Prime, material, Classic and Ecstasy designs compared here. The Rhodium matte designs are the exception: the Pro to Pro Max step is slightly wider on the 17 than on the 18.
Where can I see every design in each line?
The full galleries are the Gold iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max guide and the Gold iPhone 18 Pro Max guide. For how a Leronza order works from deposit to delivery, read the order timeline and warranty guide.
