A seated Lakshmi finished entirely in genuine 24K gold, from the beaded edge of the crown to the individual petals of the lotus base. The features of the face are painted by hand, so the expression stays legible rather than disappearing into the metal.

The risk with gilding a devotional figure is that the finish fills what the sculptor cut. Fine work — the beading of a crown, the pleats of a sari, the veins of a lotus petal — softens under a heavy coat until the piece reads as a shape rather than a subject.
Here the plating is applied so that the modelling stays crisp: you can still count the petals, follow the folds of the fabric and read the jewellery at the throat and wrists. That, rather than brightness, is the measure of a well-gilded statue.
